Lighting Measurement

Lighting Measurement

According to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, lighting measurements must be made in working environments. In this legal regulation, the minimum illuminance levels that should be in working environments are specified. The values obtained as a result of the measurement must comply with the standards and be between the highest and lowest limits.

Lighting measurements are made to determine the suitability of light intensities used in the working environments of various organizations. These organizations are required to provide their employees with the right lighting in accordance with the industry and working conditions.

The level of illumination is a factor that directly affects the performance of employees on the one hand and the activities of the organization on the other. For example, it is directly related to the production efficiency of the enterprise. It is extremely important in terms of occupational safety. In addition, it is directly related to the image quality of the product on the shelves and, accordingly, customer satisfaction. It is directly related to the length of time customers are in the store. For organizations operating in the service sector, it also directly affects the attention level of employees in office environments.

Lighting level measurements made by various laboratories are made under the supervision of authorized engineers and by experts. In general, before the illumination measurements are made, the illumination intensity measurement points are determined. The distances and rules followed in the determination of these measuring points are almost the same. The General Recommended Lighting Intensity Table is attached to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. Measurements are based on this table.

The positive effects of well-lit work environments on employees can be summarized as follows:

• Creates visual acuity. In other words, the discrimination power of the eye increases. The viewed object is seen better.
• There is a decrease in work accidents.
• It increases the productivity of the employees.
• It provides quickness in working.

In accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, it is essential that workplaces are adequately illuminated by daylight. However, if the daylight cannot be used sufficiently due to the field of activity or the location of the workplace, or in night works, artificial light should be provided. In both cases, the lighting must be sufficient and evenly distributed to the workers. The flawless execution of the activities in the workplace and, more importantly, the protection of the eye health of the employees requires a good lighting technique.
