Analysis of Siloxane (D4, D5, D6) in Cosmetics

D4, D5, D6 siloxanes, the use of which has been banned by the European Chemicals Agency as of 2020, are chemicals used in cosmetic and personal care products such as shampoos and creams due to their soft feeling. However, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) are banned due to many toxic effects and environmental damages.

The products in which D4, D5, D6 are used can be listed as follows:

- Hand creams
- Deodorants
- Shampoos
- Skin creams

European Chemicals Agency, D4, D5, D6 siloxanes are defined as: Bioaccumulative, toxic, very persistent and very bioaccumulative substances. Even the presence of 0.1% in D4, D5, D6 cosmetic and personal care products is unacceptable due to its unpredictable and irreversible effects in the long term.
